The Dillon Reservoir is an attractive destination for people looking for outdoor fun in Colorado pretty much any time of the year. This freshwater reservoir serves as a vital water source for the surrounding metro areas, but the massive body of water doubles as a local hot spot for nature and water-driven entertainment. What’s there to do at Dillon Reservoir? Find out what you can do in the area below.

Where is Dillon Reservoir?

The Dillon Reservoir, also known as the Old Dillon Reservoir or Lake Dillon, is located in Summit County, Colorado. It’s situated near the towns of Dillon, Frisco, and Breckenridge in a picturesque spot amid the Rocky Mountain landscape. Many people stop at Breckenridge Organic Therapy on their way north to the Reservoir because it is only about 10 miles north of our dispensary via CO-9 North.

Things to Do at Dillon Reservoir

Hiking

You can find a handful of awesome hiking trails around the reservoir, including the Sapphire Point trail, which takes you on a half-mile trek to a picturesque overlook. If you’re looking for biking trails, there are seven miles of purely paved paths that cut around the water and throughout the surrounding Summit County Trail system.

Fishing

Fishing is not just permitted at Dillon, it is some of the best fishing you can find in the area. The Blue River that sits just below the dam is considered “Gold Medal” water when it comes to fish abundance for certain species like Rainbow Trout and Kokanee Salmon.

Boating

Boating at Dillon is an experience for anyone who loves the mountain landscape to try at least once. Whether sailing, kayaking, or paddleboarding, visitors can enjoy the tranquility of the reservoir while surrounded by majestic peaks. Sailboat tours launch from Dillon Marina at certain times of the year for those who want to experience the water and views without bringing their own water vessel.

Camping

Roughly 350 campsites are sprinkled around Dillon, including some large enough for RVs and trailers. All camping areas provide access to water supplies while at your site, and some sites are relatively private because the massive reservoir covers such a vast area.

Can you swim in Dillon Reservoir?

Swimming is not permitted at Dillon Reservoir, primarily due to safety concerns. The higher altitude and low water temperatures enhance the risk of injury for anyone hanging out in the water. However, water quality concerns also mean swimming is prohibited.
