What is the Breckenridge Troll?
The Breckenridge Troll is a locally notorious wooden sculpture with a larger-than-life personality and size. This is no ordinary wooden troll; the creature is a work of art that provokes a sense of whimsy no matter the age of the onlooker. The troll is created of reclaimed and recycled materials and stands about 15 tall. Best of all, the Breckenridge Troll location is just off of one of the best hiking trails in the area.
About the Breckenridge Troll Artist: Thomas Dambo
Thomas Bambo is a Danish artist widely recognized for his large sculptures made entirely from recycled materials and reclaimed wood. Once a street artist, Dambo eventually shifted into creating art that highlighted sustainability and kindness to the planet by creating works that fit naturally into different environments. Each piece, including the Breck Troll, inspires people, but also engages onlookers with nature and the importance of sustainability.
The Breckenridge Troll Hike
The Trollstigen (Troll Trail) that will take you to see our local troll is a relatively easy hike that starts not far from Downtown Breckenridge. The trailhead starts across from the Stephen C. West Ice Arena, which is about a 5-minute walk from the welcome center downtown. Look for the troll-sized footprints on the pavements to find your way to the right place. The trail to the troll is not long at all, but it is part of the larger network of trails in the area.
Other Fun Facts About Breck’s Wooden Troll
The Breckenridge Troll Has a Name!
The troll’s actual name is “Isak Heartstone”. The troll started with only the name “Isak,” but soon after creation, he got a heart made of stone from a few young girls. Dambo inserted the heart into Isak’s chest, and he gained the last name “Heartstone”.
The Breckenridge Troll is the 40th Created
Isak is not the first troll to make its way into scenic points. In fact, he is the 40th troll to be bought to life from recycled materials. The wooden troll’s family members can be found scattered across the U.S., including Mama Mimi in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Mama Lou and Little Elina in Bernheim, Kentucky, Rita the Rock Planter in Cripple Creek, CO, and Leo the Enlightened in Blackberry Mountains, Tennessee. There’s even a full family of trolls living in places like South Korea, South America, and Australia.
