Top Hiking Trails Near Breckenridge for Breathtaking Autumn Views

Fall in Breck is a site to appreciate, especially for a few weeks when the aspens rapidly transition. The aspen trees melt into brilliant gold, other native trees explode into red and orange, and the gorgeous evergreens slip in just enough contrast. The spectacular sight is best viewed from some of the high points in and around the city, but you can get a good peek at the beauty from a number of good Breckenridge hiking trails.

Be sure to check out a full topographic, interactive trail map from the Town of Breckenridge to get a full view. Below are a few top leaf-peeping recommendations from true locals.

1. Sapphire Point

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Length: 0.6-mile loop

Roughly seven miles from our Colorado dispensary via CO-9, Sapphire Point is easily one of the most visited hiking trails in autumn. This trail takes you on a loop to a lookout point poised just over Lake Dillon. Even though the hike itself is short—usually requiring about 15 minutes to complete—there is no shortage of fall beauty. You’ll start out immersed in the tall trees and gradually make your way to the lookout where you can get an elevated view of the surrounding glory.

2. Boreas Pass

  • Difficulty: easy
  • Length: 19.8 miles one way

One of the most-traveled hiking trails near Breckenridge, Boreas Pass takes you directly through the Colorado wilderness. The full hike one-way can take the average hiker over seven hours to complete. Therefore, Boreas is a popular hiking location for campers who stop midway or otherwise to get some downtime along the way. And, even though the trail is easily navigable on foot, it is incredibly long and you can encounter off-road vehicles along the way. But, the views of the surrounding aspens and fall foliage can make every step worth the effort.

3. Quandary Peak Trailhead

  • Difficulty: Hard
  • Length: 7.5 miles

The Quandary Peak Trailhead starts just off of Highway 9 and leads you to Quandary Peak—one of the 58 summits higher than 14,000 feet in the state. The trail to the summit is a lengthy 7.5 miles, and you gain more than 3,000 feet of elevation along the way. Therefore, this is not one of the easiest hiking trails Breckenridge has to offer. Nevertheless, if you can withstand the altitude and weather changes and get to the top, you’re rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding lands and landscape. And, you will get incredible views as you trek your way above the tree line and up the mountain.

4. Mineral Hill Trail

  • Difficulty: Moderate to Hard
  • Length: about 1 mile

The Mineral Hill Trailhead is a short trek that gains elevation quickly, which is why most people rate this hike as more difficult. In spite of the steep inclines along the way, you get front-row seats to all the beauty that a Colorado autumn can offer. The dirt-lined path takes you to a lookout point to view Tenmile Ridge and the Wellington Ore Bin, and there are other small trails that sprout from the main trail if you want to prolong your adventure.
