5 Best Hiking Trails in Breckenridge
1. McCullough Gulch Waterfall Trail—McCullough Gulch Road, Breckenridge, CO
- Distance: 3.6 miles
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Dogs: Permitted on leash
With lake, river, and waterfall views, the McCullough Gulch Waterfall Trail is especially popular between June and September. This out-and-back hike does have some challenging sections, and you’ll want to be sure that you’re in shoes or hiking boots that offer a good grip. An important note: In the off-season (October to May), you’ll need to hike an additional two miles to the trailhead. Between June and September, you’ll be able to hitch a ride from the Quandry parking lot to the start of the trail.
2. Spruce Creek Trail to Mohawk Lakes Trail—Spruce Creek Trail (Dillon Ranger District), Co Rd 800, Breckenridge, CO
- Distance: 8.4 miles
- Difficulty: Hard
- Dogs: Permitted on leash
This heavily-trafficked trail isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s well worth the extra effort for the landscapes and wildlife you’ll be able to see as you hike. Sightings of moose, fox, and pika (small rabbits) are common on this route. Poles are recommended—you’ll be glad you have them once you hit the rocky terrain.
3. Sawmill Reservoir—Snowy Ridge Drive, Breckenridge, CO
- Distance: 1.3 miles
- Difficulty: Easy
- Dogs: Permitted on leash
Looking to take it easy? This 1.3 mile loop is a popular option that runs near a stream. Sawmill Reservoir is a great place to enjoy a picnic while taking in the gorgeous natural landscape of Breckenridge. This trail does tend to get fairly crowded, so you’ll likely have a quieter, more contemplative experience if you arrive early.
